10 hours straight without electricity: nuclear power to the rescue?

The GLP cubicle

Well, almost 10 hours…

5 days after the last blackout, Sokaraja got its turn again. They cut the powers off at around 7:24.

I needed to write using my laptop, so I went along my parents to Purwokerto and stayed at GLP for the day (pictured above). When I arrived back home, the lights were still off. It went back to normal operation on around 17:00.

Indonesia is really in an energy crisis. I became reminded of a mini seminar some years back which I attended with my KKN buddies (Tri etc.). The seminar was held by our beloved company PLN, and it was about nuclear power among other things.

They talked about the power crisis threatening Indonesia, and how nuclear power plants can be one solution. How it is safe if built and managed properly. Oh, I also remembered the luxurious lunch and the “travel expense” money they gave.

Of course there are people that oppose nuclear power plants, but faced with this on-off situation, will they eventually compromise?

I did some googling and the latest news I found was that it will be built on 2010 and operate on 2016. The place is at Muria, middle Java, which is my province but located considerably far off from my house.

I’m personally all for it! Aren’t there lots of nuclear power plants operating currently on the rest of the world? The only disastrous incidents I could think of was Chernobyl, so it’s probably indeed safe if done correctly. I need to do more reading though.

Pro or con?
